Q: I was in an accident and the officer said I needed a Financial Responsibility form. What is that and how do I get one?
A: If the officer at the scene didn’t issue one to you then go to
http://state.ak.us/dmv/forms/pdfs/466.pdf to print out a form and for directions on where to send it.

Q:  Does your department allow citizens to ride-along with patrol officers?
A: Yes.  Generally, all citizen riders are required to be at least eighteen years of age.  Special exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis for juveniles 16 to 18 years of age.  Citizen riders must be authorized in advance by the sergeant or chief of police to ride on a specific shift with a specific officer.  Riders shall remain with the officer assigned for the ride, unless prior arrangements have been made. Each citizen rider shall sign a request for permission, assumption of risk and waiver form prior to riding with the assigned officer.  They shall also cover and sign off on the orientation check list form.

Q: Does the Police Department have a notary?
A: Yes. We have a number of employees who can notarize documents. Call 983-2232 or stop by the office and bring picture ID and your documents. Do not sign document before coming in.

A: No. SPD has never set a quota on traffic tickets written.

Q: If I have a minor accident, do I have to wait for the police to arrive?
A: Technically, no, unless the total property damage is $2000 or more. If you elect to leave the scene, you can fill out a Report of Motor Vehicle Accident form at the police department. This must be completed within ten (10) days of the accident.

Q: I turned in a bike I found. If it isn't claimed can I have it?
A: Bicycles are one of the most frequently retained “Found Property” items.  They are also too large to be held in the property locker.  Bicycles shall be secured and stored in the police department’s impound lot.
It is the intent of the police department to donate lesser valued unclaimed bicycles, tricycles and toys to needy persons.  These lesser valued bikes held over 60-days will be placed outside the impound area for use by needy persons. Valued bikes will be held for the one year auction/retention period.

Q: How do I go about claiming my property?
A: Call SPD 983-2232 or come into the station and inquire about your property. Bring picture ID with you.
