D.A.R.E. At-A-Glance

In January of 2009, Officer Rick Ackerman and Police Chief Ray Leggett of the Skagway Police Department presented an updated version of D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education), to the Skagway City School Board. Superintendent Michael Dickens assisted in the collaborative effort to enable this program to once again be part of the school’s curriculum. Officer Ackerman, who just recently completed DARE training and is now certified in this, spends two days a week educating the 5th, 6th, 7th,  and 8th grades about the personal and social consequences of substance abuse and violence.

The D.A.R.E. curricula is designed to be delivered sequentially from grades K-12. First developed in 1983, D.A.R.E. has undergone multiple revisions as research findings increased knowledge of effective substance abuse prevention among school-aged youth. It is now being taught in 75 percent of U.S. school districts and in more than 43 countries around the world.

D.A.R.E.'s primary mission is to provide children with the information and skills they need to live drug-and-violence-free lives.

The mission is to equip today’s youth with the tools that will enable them to avoid negative influences and instead, allow them to focus on their strengths and potential. That's exactly what D.A.R.E. is designed to do.

Additionally, it establishes positive relationships between students and law enforcement, teachers, parents, and other community leaders. Every youngster should have the opportunity to grow-up healthy, safe, secure, and equipped with the skills needed to succeed in life. Contemporary America, however, is rampant with challenges that could keep children from a positive life path.

Everywhere we go - People want to know - Who we are - Where we come from - We are Skagway - Mighty mighty Skagway - We are drug free - Don'tcha wanna be like me?
Don't need to get high - In order to get by

I have a choice - Gotta find my own voice - Gotta be strong  - And know right from wrong  Gonna be what I want to be - Drugs won't stop me - Stay away from peers  - Who drink the beers  Overcome my fear - Avoid those tears

Getting high - Is not a way to get by - Say no to tobacco - Because I know - Nicotine will trap me - And take all my money- Everywhere we go - People wanna know - Who we are
What we stand for - We are drug free - Don'tch wanna be like me?
